3 Zero-Cost Tactics For Getting To 10,000 Engaged Members

Thanks for reading. Let’s jump in!
🚀 Community Building On A Bootstrapped Budget
1) Begin Where Your Audience Gathers
Buffer (social media tool) didn't build their own forum initially. Co-founder Joel Gascoigne spent months answering questions in existing communities like Hacker News, Reddit's subreddit r/entrepreneur, and Facebook groups. He provided genuine value without pitching and naturally mentioned Buffer when relevant. This built trust and drove organic signups.
Takeaway ➡️ Go to where your ideal members already spend time online. Become genuinely helpful. Community growth is built on value, not promotion.
2) Turn Members Into Content Creators
Indie Hackers’ (entepreneurs’ community) founder Courtland Allen built a platform for members to share startup stories, lessons learned and business metrics. Over 90% of the content is created by the community, resulting in greater efficiency and authenticity. This allowed the founder to focus on curation and engagement.
Takeaway ➡️ Crowdsource your content. Your community members are your best promoters and content creators. Find ways to reward members for creating and sharing versus simply consuming knowledge.
3) Make 'Founder-Led' Connections
Ghost’s (publishing platform) founder John O'Nolan documented his Wordpress frustration and building an alternative. This authentic approach to telling the whole company journey on a dedicated blog attracted writers and publishers who felt personally invested in their mission.
Takeaway ➡️ Share your journey, failures, and lessons learned transparently. This builds trust and emotional investment in a way that can’t be matched by paid marketing.
⭐️ The Growth Loop Or 'Community Flywheel'
Step 1: Provide value in existing communities to build credibility
Step 2: Invite valuable contributors to your space to attract quality members
Step 3: Showcase member success stories to encourage greater participation
Step 4: Drive organic growth through members sharing wins and inviting others
Step 5: Repeat with new platforms and communities
